Personality & Traits
General Overview | Damian Leath is a brilliant engineer whose expertise belies his young age. Growing up on Mars, surrounded by the pioneering spirit of the Federation's spacefaring endeavours, he developed an early fascination with starships and engineering. This passion, combined with his innate talent, led him to become a prodigy in the field. However, his rapid ascent in his career and his personal struggles have shaped him into a complex individual.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Damian's upbringing on Mars, where his father commanded a Federation shipyard, immersed him in the world of starship engineering from a young age. His natural aptitude for understanding and innovating technology quickly set him apart as a prodigy. He is incredibly intelligent, with an uncanny ability to troubleshoot and solve engineering problems under pressure. His dedication to his work and his innovative mindset make him an invaluable asset to any starship crew. Weaknesses: Despite his technical prowess, Damian struggles with social interactions due to his high-functioning sociopathy. This condition makes it difficult for him to relate to his peers and understand social cues. His bluntness can sometimes be off-putting, and his lack of preparedness for a leadership role has been a source of tension. Promoted to Chief Engineer of the USS Kepler due to his skills and a shortage of experienced personnel, Damian often finds the interpersonal aspects of his role challenging. He is aware of his social shortcomings and is making efforts to improve, but progress is slow and often fraught with setbacks. |

Ambitions | Damian's ultimate goal is to join the Daystrom Institute, one of the most prestigious research organizations in the Federation. He dreams of contributing to advancements in warp technology, particularly finding a safe method to achieve and sustain Warp 10, effectively allowing instantaneous travel across the galaxy. This ambition drives him to push the boundaries of current engineering knowledge and technology.
Hobbies & Interests | In his spare time, Damian enjoys working on personal engineering projects, often involving experimental technologies or enhancements to existing systems. He has a keen interest in theoretical physics and spends considerable time reading and studying the latest scientific research. He also claimed one of Sagan’s shuttles as effectively his own and likes to modify and improve its capabilities. To unwind, he sometimes practices martial arts, which helps him maintain his physical fitness and provides a structured way to release stress. |
Personal History | Damian grew up on Mars, where his father, Evan Leath, played a significant role as a senior officer at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, one of the Federation's top shipbuilding sites. His mother, Caitlyn, was a respected scientist working on cutting-edge propulsion systems, and his sister, Olivia, aspired to follow in their footsteps. Damian's childhood was filled with visits to starship construction sites and labs, where the technological marvels around him sparked his interest in engineering and starship design. Following the attack on mars when Damian was a child his father was reassigned to the San Fransico Fleet Yards and he spent his teen years on Earth. Just before Damian was set to join Starfleet Academy at 15, his world was shattered by a tragedy. During a routine test flight, a warp core malfunction led to a catastrophic accident. Despite rescue efforts, a series of explosions claimed the lives of Evan, Caitlyn, and Olivia. Damian was the only one successfully transported out, making him the sole survivor. The incident left him deeply scarred and profoundly affected his outlook on life. The loss of his family left Damian isolated and driven by a need to honour their memory. He threw himself into his studies with relentless dedication, excelling in engineering and graduating at the top of his class from Starfleet Academy. However, his time at the academy was marked by challenges. His blunt and often rude interactions, stemming from his high-functioning sociopathy, led to frequent clashes with peers and superiors. It took the intervention of a senior officer, who saw his potential, to help Damian understand the importance of teamwork and social cohesion in Starfleet. This guidance, coupled with Damian's desire to improve, led him to work on his interpersonal skills and apologize for his past behaviour. Through persistent effort, Damian developed better social awareness, though it remained a work in progress. He excelled in all his engineering courses, often devising innovative solutions to complex problems. Recognizing his potential, his professors and mentors pushed him to challenge himself further. Eventually, Damian graduated at the top of his engineering class, earning accolades for his technical achievements and showing significant improvement in his ability to work within a team. |
